Blythe Square History

Blythe Square was one of the smaller public spaces in Brunswick, originally known as Blythe Place. Located along Norwich Street less than a block off of the main artery of Gloucester Street, Blythe Square is along the easternmost border of the original squares of the 1771 master plan for the city.

Several of the smaller squares, or “places” in the city, were repurposed for commercial or private use over time. Blythe Square was one of those cases. Half of the originally platted square was relocated to accommodate the needs of a local business; the other half was an empty space behind the First United Methodist Church of Brunswick. With significant support from the church and other restoration partners, Signature Squares of Brunswick transformed Blythe Square from a bleak parking space into a vibrant community garden in July 2010.
